Que Pasa Puerto Morelos? July 31 2011

Stormy days and hot nights the last few weeks and this Sunday clear blue skies and parties on the beach as usual! Our big news is that we are moving The Little Mexican Cooking School to the new premises at Casa Caribe (called Hotelito Marviya for the last 7 years) which is on Rojo Gomez right across from the beach in the middle of town. It gives us a bigger kitchen and entertaining space so that we can offer more hands on, small events, chef courses and in the future the Cooking School Cafe. Casa Caribe will reopen in mid October (website under construction by the fabulous Ellen Fields of Yucatan Living www.casacaribepuertomorelos.com) with low opening rates. There will be 5 large airy rooms available to rent, all renovated, new appliances, crisp clean sheets, ocean views, hammocks, private terraces and breakfast provided by the Cooking School - we are all very excited. Also on the look out for outdoor furniture and rustic decorations. If you are in town in late October keep an ear open for the opening Antojitos and Botanas party. Coco has been very successful with

her yoga retreats on Saturday - you spend a whole day in yoga and meditation and eat the most delicious raw food, I highly recommend the day at only 400 pesos each  Corinne:  corinne_lepage@hotmail.com. Coco is seen here on the beach today celebrating her birthday with her son Jules (now working at Cafe Amancia) and Katie Walsh (now working weekends at the Beach Bar) who are our 2 latest Puerto Morelians. Yay! We are an Alcaldia but what does it mean? The word originates in Spain and does mean where the Mayor does business but in contemporary Mexico it grants the local mayor slightly more autonomy for decisions than they would normally have. For Puerto Morelos it means that there is the strong possibility we will be our own municipality in 3 years time.  There was an Extraordinary sitting of the Constitutional Committee of Benito Juarez in the Parque de Puerto Morelos to ratify the formation of the Alcaldia.
Healthcare in Mexico just got easier
Ever wondered about the quality of medical care in Mexico? Well we,
Mayor 'Pancho' opens clinic
who live here, are more than happy with the hospitals and our treatment so much so that my friends Ralf and Yvonne Leszinski (www.healthstarmedicaltourism.com) have started a service especially to bring foreigners into Merida for all sort of treatments and surgery at excellent rates and with world class doctors, if you are interested please have a look at their website . El Mundo par Puerto Morelos has been busy in the background with the help of friends in the USA we managed to bring in a defibrillator to aid the new dispensary in the colonia, which opened early this month. Big new clean building with 2 examination rooms and a pychiatrist's room, the clinic is open from 6.30pm every night with free consultations. We had boxes of medical supplies delivered as well. Never forget the living conditions in the colonia for some of our workers are difficult, these are three huts made out of packing crates just behind the Catholic Church, the charity helped William with his recent kidney surgery. We were especially thrilled to be able to bring in from Hope Missions a wheelchair for 5 year old Jesus, who is unable to sit or stand on his own. You can only try and imagine how difficult this has been for his parents whose relief on receipt of this special chair was obvious to all. This is where your money goes! We were thrilled to welcome Catherine Beardall and her family who spent months preparing with the local Eagle Scouts for their trip to Puerto Morelos. Lots of collections and weekend workshops resulted in a huge collection of presents for the children at the local primary school - useful items for school and special treats were all welcomed.  Thank you all for your
